Laurie Walker - Amy Ferguson Award - For 40 years Laurie Walker has been and continues to be an exemplary choral director, teacher and singer who gives of himself to challenge and inspire youth and adults to achieve choral excellence. His professionalism, youthful energy, knowledge of music, flexibility and understanding create an atmosphere which fosters learning and confidence. As the Music Director of the Arion Male Voice Choir, the Crystal Singers and the Avalon Singers, Laurie instills the members with his enthusiasm and love of music, as evidenced by their successful performances and their growing reputations and audiences. Laurie’s choirs are invited to perform in retirement homes, at community events including the Remembrance Day Service at the B.C. Legislature, and in numerous benefit concerts for foundations, charities and churches. Laurie deserves this award in recognition of his lifelong dedication to choral teaching and direction which have allowed hundreds of singers to experience success.

(Dr. Amy Ferguson was the founder and conductor of the renowned Nelson Boys' Choir. From 1931 until her death in 1972 , she was mentor and guide to hundreds of young people in the Nelson area as a voice and piano teacher and choral conductor. Many of Mrs. Ferguson's students went on to distinguished careers as vocal soloists and teachers.)

Laurie Walker has taught music since the late 1960's in both Ottawa and Victoria. He is well known for his high caliber student choirs at
Monterey, Lampson and Eagle View Schools here in Victoria. He is also the former Director of the very accomplished and popular Youth Choir 61.
Laurie has been involved with adult singers for many years. He was Musical Director of the Victoria Village Squires and currently conducts 3 choirs:
The Crystal Singers since 1997, the Arion Male Voice Choir since 2002 - the longest running male choir in Canada, and the Avalon Singers since
January of 2007.
Laurie's knowledge of music, his ability and technique, entwined with an absolutely great animated sense of humor, make the Avalon Singers rehearsals
and concerts a VERY fun place to be. We are SO lucky to have him.
